How to add a quiz to a lesson depends on which course builder you are using. In the New Course Builder, quizzes are added as content blocks within a lesson. In the Classic Course Builder, quizzes are their own lesson type.

If your site was created on or after January 28, 2026, you have access to the new course builder, in addition to the classic course builder. Learn about new features, improvements, and how to try it out: Introducing Thinkific's New Course Builder

How to Add a Quiz in the New Course Builder

In the New Course Builder, quizzes are added as content blocks within a lesson.

  1. From the content menu, select Quiz.
  2. Click Build quiz.
  3. Click Add question to start building.

Quiz questions can be multiple choice (one correct answer) or multiple correct answers (learner must select all correct answers). Question type can be changed in the top-right corner of the question. Add an explanation for the correct answer in the Answer explanation field — this displays to learners after they submit, regardless of whether they answered correctly.

Important Considerations

  • Admin-side analytics and quiz results are not yet available in the New Course Builder.
  • Passing grades are not yet supported in the New Course Builder.
  • Randomized Question Banks are not yet supported in the New Course Builder.
  • The AI Quiz Generator is not yet supported in the New Course Builder.

How to Add a Quiz Lesson in the Classic Course Builder

Quiz lessons in the Classic Course Builder allow you to create multiple-choice questions with one or multiple correct answers. You can add questions using the AI Quiz Generator, by importing a .xlsx file, or manually.

  1. From your Admin Dashboard, select Products.
  2. Select Courses.
  3. Select the course you want to edit by clicking on the course card image.
  4. From the Curriculum tab, select Add Lesson under your desired chapter.
  5. Select Quiz from the lesson types displayed.
  6. Enter a title for your quiz.

In the Classic Course Builder, you can add questions using the AI Quiz Generator, by importing questions, or manually.

How to Add Questions Using the AI Quiz Generator

Only available in the Classic Course Builder.

The AI Quiz Generator is available on the Basic plan and above. It creates multiple-choice questions based on existing text, PDF, and video lessons in the same chapter as the quiz. Videos must have closed captions enabled to be used in quiz generation.

  1. Open the Create with AI menu by clicking on the arrow.
  2. Select the number of questions you want to create.
  3. Select Generate Questions. The AI Generator will create questions based on text, PDF, and video lessons in the same chapter as the quiz.
  4. Review the generated questions and answers. Correct answers will be marked as (Correct).
  5. Select Accept and add to quiz to use the generated questions, or Regenerate questions to get a new set.
  6. Once added, you can edit, rearrange, or delete questions as needed.

Important Considerations

  • The AI Quiz Generator is available in the Classic Course Builder on all paid plans (Basic and above).
  • The AI Quiz Generator only uses content from text, PDF, and video lessons within the same chapter as the quiz. Videos must have closed captions to be used in quiz generation.
  • Note that some creators may not yet have the ability to use videos in AI Quiz Generation. This functionality is being rolled out to all qualified creators.
  • If your video lessons have text added to them, the AI Quiz Generator will not use this text when generating questions.
  • The AI Quiz Generator does not use information from videos, images, or external content embedded into a text lesson.
  • Questions and answers are generated based on the first 8,000–10,000 words found in the chapter's text, PDF, and video lessons.
  • To generate questions from a PDF, the text must be selectable — scanned or image-based PDFs cannot be processed.
  • Generated questions will have three answer options and one correct answer. You can add more choices or mark additional answers as correct by editing the questions after they are created.
  • The AI Quiz Generator can be used on both new and existing quiz lessons.

How to Add Questions by Importing

Only available in the Classic Course Builder.

You can add multiple questions at once using a .xlsx file. See: Importing Quiz Questions.

How to Add Questions Manually

  1. From the question type dropdown, select whether your question will have one correct answer or one or more correct answers.
  2. Enter your question in the Question field. You can use the text editor to include video, images, and audio within the question.

  3. Under Choice 1, enter the first answer option.
  4. Check or uncheck the box below Choice 1 to mark whether this is a correct answer.
  5. Continue adding choices following steps 3 and 4. Select Add choice to add more options, or the trash icon to delete an option.
  6. (Optional) Enter an explanation in the Explanation field. This displays to students after they submit their answer, regardless of whether they answered correctly. If a passing grade is required, you can enable or disable the display of explanations under Lesson Settings.
  7. Continue adding questions following the steps above. Use the duplicate button to recreate an existing question, or the ellipsis icon to delete it. Use the reorder icon in the upper left of each question to adjust the order students will receive them.
  8. Adjust your Lesson Settings as needed.
  9. Select Save.

Setting a Passing Grade Requirement

Only available in the Classic Course Builder.

You can require students to achieve a passing grade before they can reach 100% course completion. For steps on how to enable this, see: Requiring a Passing Grade within a Quiz.

If you want to ensure students attempt the quiz without requiring a passing grade, you can set it as a prerequisite lesson — students will need to complete it before moving on to the next chapter.

Randomized Question Bank

Only available in the Classic Course Builder.

You can add questions to a quiz bank and set how many questions appear when a student takes the quiz — the system will then generate a unique quiz for each student. See: Randomized Question Bank for Quizzes.
