You can require learners to achieve a passing grade on a quiz before it is marked as complete. How you set this up depends on which course builder you are using.
New Course Builder
In the New Course Builder, passing grades are set within the quiz builder as a graded quiz setting.
- In the quiz builder, click Settings in the top-right corner.
- Check Graded quiz.
- Under Passing grade, enter your desired grade percentage.
- (Optional) Check Show answers and explanations on all attempts to let learners see correct answers and explanations on the results page.
- Click Save settings.
Note: In the New Course Builder, answer explanations are not shown by default when a passing grade is required — you can enable them using the optional step above. This is different from the Classic Course Builder, where explanations are configured per question in the quiz editor and controlled separately under Lesson Settings.
Changing the passing grade updates pass/fail results for learners who have already taken the quiz. It will not affect lesson completions.
Classic Course Builder
In the Classic Course Builder, passing grades are configured in the Quiz Lesson settings. Learners will still be able to navigate to the next lesson or chapter, but will need to pass all required quizzes before they can reach 100% course completion.
If you want learners to achieve a passing grade before moving on to the next chapter, you can also set the quiz as a prerequisite lesson.
- Within a Quiz Lesson, scroll down to Lesson Settings.
- Check the box beside This quiz requires a passing grade.
- Enter the Passing grade percentage.
- (Optional) Check Allow question explanations to show under Lesson Settings if you want to provide learners with information immediately after they submit their answers. Explanations display regardless of whether the learner answered correctly.
- Click Save.
Note: In the Classic Course Builder, answer explanations are deactivated by default when a passing grade is required, to prevent learners from receiving correct answers before retaking the quiz. This is different from the New Course Builder, where explanations are controlled via the graded quiz settings.
Important Considerations
- Learners will not be able to reach 100% course completion unless they have passed all quizzes where a passing grade is required.
- If a passing grade is added to a Classic Course Builder quiz after some learners have already completed it, their completion percentage will not change. However, their pass/fail status will update. Affected learners will need to retake the quiz and pass with the new minimum grade to receive a certificate.
