About Thinkific Payment Fees
When you use Thinkific Payments to process your payments, we partner with Stripe to make it happen. For example, if you're a customer based in the US or Canada, you'll be charged a fee of 2.9% plus 30 cents for every successful credit card payment. It's a straightforward and hassle-free way to get paid for your hard work!
The transaction fees associated with payments processed through Thinkific Payments differ depending on the country where your business operates, the currency of the transaction, a student's location, the payment method the student uses to pay for their product, whether the Sales Tax & VAT solution is used to determine the applicable tax, and whether you used features like invoicing.
Generally, the following transaction fees will apply:
- Payment method fees: card, digital wallet, bank redirect, or BNPL fees
- These are broken down further into transaction, internation cards, currency converstion, or subscription and payment plan fees, as applicable.
- Sales Tax & VAT fee: if a sales tax or VAT was assessed
If you use invoicing feature, an invoicing fee is charged and the transaction fee depends on the payment method chosen.

Card Transaction Fees
Cards are popular for consumers and businesses to pay online or in person. Thinkific Payments supports global and local card networks.
Each card transaction will incur a transaction fee (split into variable and fixed portion), see green columns below. E.g. transactions made by businesses in Canada will incur 2.9%+C$0.30.
In addition to the transaction fees, additional fees might apply, depending on the card used, whether a currency conversion is required, and whether the payment is for a subscription or a payment plan. See yellow columns below.
Note that as of March 01, 2026, the Subscriptions & Payment Plans fee was increased from 0.5% to 0.7% to match the existing industry and Stripe standards.

Sales Tax and VAT Solution Fees
There is a 0.5% fee for every transaction where tax is assessed, i.e. every non-zero dollar transaction in which the student is located in the United States, Canada, the UK, and the EU. This means that the fee applies even when the system calculates the tax rate as 0% (due to the student’s location, product’s tax category, or student’s exemption status). The fee is based on the total amount paid by your student (including product price and tax).
The fee does not apply to:
- Free orders
- Transactions where a 100% off coupon was applied
- Transactions from students located outside of the United States, Canada, the UK, and the EU
- Transactions from students in the UK and the EU in a jurisdiction where the buyer location is not a jurisdiction where the seller is registered for tax

Invoicing Fees
A fee of 0.4% applies to each invoice paid through Thinkific when using Thinkific's invoicing solution, with a maximum amount for the following currencies:
- USD: $5.00
- CAD: $8.00
- EUR: €5.00
- GBP: £4.50
- AUD: $9.00
- NZD: $10.00
Additionally, depending on the payment method chosen when creating an invoice, a payment processing fee will apply in addition to the 0.4% invoicing fee and any other applicable fees, e.g. Sales Tax fee.

Instant Payout Fees
When you use the Instant Payout functionality, an additional fee is deducted from your total earned amount. The fee is based on your location.

Refunds to Students
There are no fees to refund a charge. However, the fees from the original charge are not returned. This is true for full and partial refunds.

To see how much you are being charged on any particular transaction, you can check your Orders Report: the Fees column will display any fees associated with a particular Order, and the Provider column will show who processed the payment. For a further fee breakdown, click on an individual transaction in the Transaction Report.
You can also access your Payout Report to view your payout status and the transaction fees.
