How It Works
Local currency at checkout is automatically enabled for eligible TCommerce customers on all paid plans. To access this feature, as well as other powerful features on TCommerce that help you save time and sell more, enable Thinkific Payments on your account: Thinkific Payments.
When a buyer reaches checkout, their location is detected based on their IP address and the price is automatically shown in their local currency, when supported. The feature uses real-time exchange rates. Buyers can see the exchange rate and switch back to your original pricing currency at any time.
Exchange rates are handled automatically using real-time data, ensuring consistent and transparent pricing.
At the moment, local currency at checkout is only available for:
- transactions made using Thinkific Payments,
- products with a one-time pricing option (including transactions with order bumps),
- accounts that have the same pricing and payout currency.
Local currency at checkout is not available on:
- transactions made using PayPal,
- products with recurring pricing (subscription or monthly payment),
- accounts where the payment and payout currencies differ.
We are continuously working on extending features to encompass more use cases. If local currency is not supported with your current checkout setup, send us your feedback and keep an eye out for future updates.
Disable or Re-enable the Feature

- From your Admin Dashboard, select Settings
- Select the Payments tab
- Find the Pricing currency section

- Local currency at checkout supports buyers in over 150 countries, but the availability may vary by the buyer's location.
- The feature uses real-time exchange rates, so the displayed amount in the local currency may differ over time.
- At the moment, Buy Now, Pay Later payment methods will not display if local currency at checkout is enabled. Even when a buyer selects your default currency, the BNPL methods will not appear.
- If you use the Multi currency converter app from the Thinkific app store, we recommend disabling the app before enabling the built-in local currency at checkout feature to avoid price discrepancies between landing pages and the checkout.
Buyer Experience
When a buyer reaches checkout, their location is detected based on their IP address and the price is automatically shown in their local currency, when supported. The feature uses real-time exchange rates. Buyers can see the exchange rate and switch back to your original pricing currency at any time.
The transaction flow remains the same. Once the buyer has purchased the product, their payment method will be charged in their selected currency. The buyers and the site admin's order receipt will display prices in your site's currency, but will include a line specifying the amount and the currency of the charge, if it was charged in the buyer's local currency.
Note that the Order History section of the Student profile will display prices in the site's currency only (not the local currency).

New Order Notifications

Transactions Table
The Transaction table will list transactions made by users in the currency of your site. You can view the receipt to see the line specifying the amount and the currency of the charge, if it was charged in the buyer's local currency.
Additionally, the transaction report export will include two new columns:
- Presentment currency: the currency in which the transaction was charged (i.e. buyer's local currency)
- Presentment amount: the amount that the transaction was charged in, based on the presentment currency (buyer's local currency)
Order Table
The way orders are displayed in the Order table is unaffected; orders will be displayed in the currency of your site.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I turn local currency at checkout off?
Yes, follow these steps to disable the feature on your site.
Does this change how I price my products?
No. You still set and manage prices in your main pricing currency. Payouts will also be made in the currency of your site.
What exchange rate is used?
Conversion is handled in the background by Stripe and is calculated using the real-time exchange rate plus a foreign exchange buffer. The buffer is applied to ensure price stability during the course of the transaction.
Note that refunds are processed using the same exchange rate applied at purchase.
Why is BNPL not available when local currency at checkout is turned on?
At the moment, Buy Now, Pay Later payment methods will not display if local currency at checkout is enabled. Even when a buyer selects your default currency, the BNPL methods will not appear.
Can buyers choose a different currency?
Buyers will have the option to purchase on your site's currency or in their local currency, based on their location. At the moment, buyers cannot select an additional currency option.
Do international card fees apply to transactions made using local currency at checkout?
Yes, international card fees will apply, where applicable.
I am using a Multi-currency converter app. Can I still use local currency at checkout?
If you use the Multi currency converter app from the Thinkific app store, we recommend disabling the app before enabling the built-in local currency at checkout feature.
Multi currency converter app changes which currency is displayed on landing pages, but does not affect the checkout page and the transaction currency. While the Multi currency converter app and the built-in local currency at checkout functionality will technically work together, they might display different prices, as the calculated exchange rate might differ, which can cause student distrust.
