Are you looking to start a membership site, or set up recurring payments or subscriptions for your products? With Thinkific, you have the option to set up subscription pricing for your products!
In this article:
About This Feature
You will need to have T-Commerce or Stripe connected to your Thinkific site to set up a subscription price.
The subscription payment option allows you to take recurring payments for your course, bundle, membership, or community via Thinkific Payments or Stripe. Subscriptions are based on monthly or yearly billing periods, and the user’s billing date will be based on the day of the month that they sign up.
In the example below, a monthly subscription has been set up for $50 per month. If a user were to sign up for this monthly (30-day) subscription on January 15th, their next billing date would be on February 15th.

Payment Frequency
In the Paid every field, you can define the recurring period on which you would like your customers to be charged. Subscriptions are based on monthly or yearly billing periods, and you can specify a value for the monthly or yearly frequency.
- Example of a $50 per month subscription:
- If a user signs up for a monthly subscription on Jan 1st, they will be charged again on the first day of every consecutive month (ie: Jan 1st, Feb 1st, Mar 1st, etc.)
- Example of a $50 subscription every 3 months:
- If a user signs up for a tri-monthly subscription on Jan 1st, they will be charged again on the first day of every third month (ie: Jan 1st, Apr 1st, Jul 1st, etc.)
- Example of a $99 yearly subscription:
- If a user signs up for an annual subscription on Jan 1st of 2019, they will be charged again on the first day of the next calendar year (ie: Jan 1st of 2020, Jan 1st, 2021, etc.)
Free Trial Period
You can also choose to offer a Free Trial period prior to the beginning of your user's subscription. The duration of the free trial is decided by you and can be set for either a certain number of days, or months. During this free trial, all offerings within the product will be available (ie: for a course with an attached free trial, all lessons within the course would be available unless a Drip Schedule has been put in place to prevent certain lessons from being accessed).
Custom First Payment
In this optional field, you can add a custom initial payment for your subscription. If you choose to add a custom first payment, this payment will apply to the first billing period of your subscription, and your subscription pricing will apply to any subsequent billing periods.
Example of a monthly subscription with a custom payment:
If you have set up a subscription price of $50 per month, and add a custom first payment of $25, any user who purchases this product will pay $25 for the first month and then $50 on their next billing date a month later.
Example of a yearly subscription with a custom payment:
If you have set up a subscription price of $50 per year, and added a custom first payment of $25, any user who purchases this product will pay $25 for the first year, and then $50 on their next billing date one year later.
You cannot apply both a Free trial period and Custom first payment.
Important Considerations
- As with payment plan pricing, if you change or update your subscription pricing this will not affect existing users, and will only apply for new enrollments moving forward.
- You will need to choose and set up a payment processor before you can set up a payment plan. Thinkific Payments is our built-in payments processor, and we also support direct integrations with PayPal and Stripe to accept payment for your courses.
- Products with recurring (subscription or payment plan) pricing cannot be offered as a gift or for a group order.
- At this time, Order Bump products with recurring (subscription or payment plan) pricing cannot be added to a primary product with recurring (subscription or payment plan) pricing.
- Digital Download and Coaching & Webinars products do not support subscription payment.
