How Digital Downloads Work
Create and offer a digital download with these easy steps!
- Upload the file and adjust the settings
- Price your product: choose if you want to use the digital download for free in exchange for contact info or if you want to sell your downloadable content.
- Review and customize the landing page: use AI to quickly generate beautiful and optimized landing pages or build them from scratch.
- Publish!
Once the Digital Download is published, you can share it with your audience. When a potential or existing customer visits the landing page, they can access the digital download by submitting their contact info or by purchasing the download using the checkout.
Create a Digital Download Product
With the power of AI, you can set up your Digital Download within minutes - simply enter your product idea into the prompt to generate your product along with an accompanying landing page.
To create a Digital Download product:
- Go to Products
- Select Digital Downloads
- Select + New digital download
- Use the prompt to enter a description for your audience and what they will learn from your product - don't worry, you'll be able to make changes later
- Optional: Click Skip - create blank product to create a blank product without using AI
- Click Create
- Click the Digital Download tab
- Select your content type

Upload your file
You can upload files up to 2 GBs and of the following extensions: 3g2, 3gpp, 3gpp2, 3gp, aac, asf, asx, avi, bmp, csv, doc, docx, epub, f4p, f4v, flv, gif, jpeg, jpg, m4a, m4v, m4p, mpe, mpeg, mpg, mp2, mp3, mp3g, mp4, mov, mp4, odt, ogg, ogv, ogx, ods, pdf, png, pps, ppt, pptx, qt, rtf, tiff, txt, viv, vivo, wav, webm, webp, wmv, wm, wmx, wvx, xls, xlt, xlsx.
The file name cannot exceed 255 characters. - Upload your product image
- Click Save
Your AI-generated Digital Download will come with an auto-created product name and description, which you can edit any time. You'll also see a preview of your landing page, made from AI-generated content based on your prompt, that you can customize as you wish.
You can see the preview of your product card as you create and edit your Digital Download settings.
Once your Digital Download is created, you can proceed to the Pricing tab and decide if you want to offer your product for free as a lead magnet or as a paid product!
Price Your Digital Download
To price your Digital Download product:
- Go to Products
- Select Digital Downloads
- Select the digital download product
- Select the Pricing tab
You will see three pricing options:

Digital Downloads make great order bumps! Note that only Paid Digital Downloads can be used as order bumps.
When using one-time payment and monthly payment plan options, you can set the enrollment duration for your product. The enrollment duration determines how long your students can access the product link and download their purchased product. Once the enrollment duration expires, the download link will no longer work.
Note that if a student downloads the product to their device during the enrollment duration period, they will have access to the download indefinitely.
Create and Edit a Digital Download Landing Page
Digital Downloads are powered by our new technology, providing an easier way to build and publish landing pages for your product! You can leverage AI by completing simple prompts to automatically generate a landing page. This technology provides a new landing page editor, where you can make design changes (colors, text, imagery, etc) without the need for custom coding.
By default, Digital Downloads will always use AI landing pages and cannot be switched to classic website pages. For more information on the different types of course pages, check out our guide: What is the Difference between Landing Pages and Website Pages?
To access your Digital Download landing page:
- Go to Products
- Select Digital Downloads
- Select the digital download product
- Select the Landing Page tab
- Click Edit page
You can also find your Digital Download landing page by following these steps:
- From your Admin Dashboard, go to Channels
- Select Landing Pages
- Select the digital download landing page you want to edit
The page will be in Draft mode and not be publicly available until the product is published.
Publish Your Digital Download
After you priced your product and customized your landing page, you can publish and share your product:
- Go to Products
- Select Digital Downloads
- Select the digital download product
- Click the Publish button then Publish now
- Click Publish
Congratulations, you have successfully launched your digital downloads product! You can copy your Digital Downloads landing page URL or share it directly to social media.
What Happens When the Product is Published?
When the product is published:
- The landing page goes live and can be accessed via the URL
- Your customers can now access the page and sign up for or purchase the product
- Your customers can now access the content

You will not be able to adjust specific landing page settings, such as Page
LayoutYou can still make most of the edits to your landing page, even if it is live. The changes will not be reflected until they are published.
- You will see a warning when trying to edit the product price
Unpublish Your Digital Download
Make sure that you have removed the product URL from your marketing materials first before unpublishing your digital download.
If you want to stop selling your digital download, you can unpublish it. To do that:
- Go to Products
- Select Digital Downloads
- Select the digital download product
- Click the Update status button then click Unpublish
- Click Unpublish
What Happens When the Product is Unpublished?
When the product is unpublished:
- The landing page goes to the draft mode
- Your customers will no longer be able to access the page and sign up for or purchase the product
- Your customers will no longer be able to access the content through the download link, even if they have already purchased it
- You will be able to adjust all page settings for the landing page
Visitor and Student Experience
When your digital download product is published, your landing page for the product will be visible to leads and/or potential students. The exact experience will differ depending on if you choose to offer your product for free or as a paid product.

Student Experience with Paid Products
If your digital download product is priced as a one-time payment or monthly payment, your students can find your landing page via a direct URL or by browsing your collections page. When visiting the page, students can purchase the digital download by going through the built-in checkout.
Once students complete the checkout process, they will be redirected to the page, where they can download the requested file. Additionally, they will receive an email with the download link, as well as a site welcome email (if enabled) and a receipt (if enabled).
Digital Downloads will not appear on the Student Dashboard.
Students will be able to download the file only if they are logged in using valid credentials, preventing them from sharing the download link.
Your students can also access their digital downloads through the Thinkific Mobile app or your Branded app.
Additionally, if an enrollment duration is set, the link will only be available for the length of the enrollment duration.
Creator Experience
The creator's experience with digital download products will depend on whether you choose to position your product as a Free Lead Magnet or as a paid product.

Creator Experience with Paid Products
When a student purchases a paid digital product, they are created as a user and can be found in the Users table and you will receive a new signup notification (if enabled). Digital Downloads will NOT appear in the list of enrollments, however, they can be found in the Orders and Transactions tables.
Frequently Asked Questions
My student lost the download email, can I share the file manually?
Yes, you can access and send the direct download link. To access the link:
- From the Admin Dashboard, select Products
- Select Digital Downloads
- Find the digital download you want to access
- Click on the three dots on the digital download card
- Select Copy product link
The direct access link will be copied to your clipboard and you can send it to your students.
Can I delete a Digital Download?
No. At this time Digital Downloads cannot be permanently deleted or archived, however, you can unpublish your digital download by following the instructions above.
Can I use Digital Downloads with Zapier or webhooks?
Digital Download Purchases will trigger the New Order webhook and Zapier trigger, which includes information about the purchase of that product. However, it will NOT trigger a New Enrollment webhook or trigger. Free Lead Magnet Digital Downloads will trigger a New Lead webhook and Zapier trigger. Learn more: Manage Your Leads.
Can I use Digital Downloads with Order Bumps?
Yes, Digital Downloads make great order bumps! Note that only Paid Digital Downloads can be used as order bumps.
Are digital downloads purchases considered Enrollments?
No, students who purchase digital downloads will be given access to the digital download but they will not be considered enrollments. A user’s access to a digital download will not be returned from the Enrollments API. It will not be viewable or editable on the User Enrollment page.
Can I modify the digital download thank you page?
No, at the moment it is not possible to modify the thank you page that is displayed once a digital download is purchased.
Can I modify the digital download emails?
No, at the moment it is not possible to modify the emails that students/visitors receive when they purchase digital downloads.
Can I bulk enroll students into Digital Downloads?
