- The checklist presents a configurable set of first steps — upload a profile photo, complete a lesson, join a community, watch the welcome video, set a learning goal, download the mobile app, and more. You control which items appear.
- Learners mark each item as done themselves. The checklist tracks their progress as they work through the list.
- Items that don't apply to your site — for example, "Download the mobile app" on a site without a configured mobile app — are automatically hidden for both you and your learners.
- You can see the checklist widget in their admin view of the Learner Hub.
How the Learner Onboarding Checklist Works
When a learner visits the Learner Hub, the checklist widget appears on their home page with a short list of first steps to help them get oriented. Each item represents a meaningful action that encourages the learner to engage with your site in their first session — the session most likely to determine whether they come back.
When setting the onboarding checklist, you have the option to hide items that are not relevant. Items that don't apply to your site are hidden automatically — if you don't have a community set up, for example, the "Introduce yourself in the community" item won't appear for your learners or in your admin view.
Once a student checks off an item, it is crossed out. Completions are self-reported: learners mark items as done themselves. The platform does not verify individual completions.
After all items are checked off, a learner has the option to dismiss the widget.
How to Enable the Learner Onboarding Checklist
The Learner Onboarding Checklist widget is opt-in — it won't appear on your Learner Hub until you add it.
Step 1: Add the Widget to the Learner Hub
Follow these instructions on how to enable the Learner Hub (if it is not enabled yet) and add a widget to you the learner hub home page.
Step 2: Configure Which Items Appear in the Widget
You can control which checklist items are shown to your learners. Items that aren't applicable to your site are hidden automatically — for example, if you don't have a community set up, the "Introduce yourself in the community" item won't appear.
To remove or restore items that appear in the checklist:
- From your Admin Dashboard, select Learner Hub
- Find the Learner Onboarding Checklist widget you added in Step 1
- Select the ellipsis (three dots) in the corner of the widget
- Select Edit
- Click on the eye icon next to the checklist item to hide or unhide it from learners
Important Considerations
- The Learner Onboarding Checklist widget is opt-in — it won't appear on your Learner Hub until you add it from the available widgets list in Edit layout.
- Completions are self-reported. The platform does not verify that a learner actually completed an item.
- Items that don't apply to your site are automatically hidden — you don't need to remove them manually.
- The Learner Onboarding Checklist is available on the Learner Hub Home page only.
- At the moment, the Learner Onboarding Checklist is available on the web version only. It is not supported on the Thinkific Mobile or Branded apps.
