Question
- Do Stripe and PayPal have Two Factor Authentication (2FA)?
- How can I set up Two Factor Authentication to be SCA/PSD2 Compliant?
- Do your payment integrations have two factor authentication?
Solution
Typically if you are looking for Two Factor Authentication for your checkout, you are a customer located in the European Economic Area (EEA). As of September 14, 2019 there was an update to the EU’s Payment Services Directive (known as PSD2) which changed requirements for many online payments. Specifically, Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) is now required for online payments between businesses based in the EEA and customers based in the EEA.
If you accept payments on Thinkific via Stripe or Paypal (via Thinkific's Built in Checkout), you are SCA and are compliant with PSD2.
All that said, when making a payment on Thinkific's Built in Checkout, students will not be required to provide Two Factor Authentication (2FA). If you would like to use a payment processor with 2FA, we suggest looking into integrating external payment solutions: External Payment Solution: What to Consider.
