Question
- When will all my students' subscriptions and payment plans migrate to Thinkific Payments?
- Why are students' recurring payments still being processed through Stripe even after I signed up for Thinkific Payments?
- Why does it take 30–60 days for a student's subscription to move to Thinkific Payments
Solution
When you sign up for Thinkific Payments, existing student subscriptions and payment plans in Stripe will be automatically queued for migration to Thinkific Payments.
After 30 days, these existing, recurring payments will be migrated to Thinkific Payments. Following this migration, all student payments for these subscriptions and payment plans will be processed through Thinkific Payments. The payment schedule (billing cycle) for migrated subscriptions and payment plans will be the same as it previously was in Stripe.
Records of past student payments will be available to view and refund from your Stripe dashboard. Any payments processed through Thinkific Payments are available to view, cancel, and refund in your Transaction Report.
After subscription and payment plans have been migrated to Thinkific Payments, no future payments for these subscriptions and payment plans will be processed through Stripe.
Example Billing Scenarios
Scenario 1: Normal Migration After 30 Days
On June 1, your student, Student A, purchases your prouct - which has monthly subscription-based pricing - using Stripe. You sign up for Thinkific Payments on June 2, after previously using Stripe to process student payments.
On July 1, your student is billed for their subscription through Stripe. On July 2 (30 days after you signed up for Thinkific Payments), your students' subscriptions (including Student A's subscription) and payment plans migrate to Thinkific Payments.
On August 1, Student A is billed for their subscription through Thinkific Payments.
Scenario 2: Migration After 60 Days
On June 1, your student, Student A, purchases your product - which has monthly subscription-based pricing - using Stripe. You sign up for Thinkific Payments on June 3, after previously using Stripe to process student payments.
On June 30, your Thinkific account status changes from Verified. On July 1, your student is billed for their subscription through Stripe.
On July 3, your students' subscriptions (including Student A's subscription) are not migrated to Thinkific Payments due to the missing Verified status. On July 4, your Thinkific account status returns to Verified.
On August 1, Student A is billed for their subscription through Stripe. On August 2 (60 days after you signed up for Thinkific Payments), your students' subscriptions (including Student A's subscription) and payment plans migrate to Thinkific Payments.
On September 1, Student A is billed for their subscription through Thinkific Payments.
Scenario 3: No Migration Required
You sign up for Thinkific Payments on June 2. On June 3, your student, Student A, purchases your product - which has monthly subscription-based pricing - using Thinkific Payments. On July 3, Student A is billed for their subscription through Thinkific Payments.
Important Considerations
- Your Thinkific Payments account status must be Verified for student payments to migrate to Thinkific Payments.
- A student's subscription and/or payment plan must have one of the following statuses in Stripe in order to be migrated to Thinkific Payments: active (and not paused), past due, or trialing.
- Subscriptions or payment plans that have a canceled status in Stripe will not be migrated to Thinkific Payments.
- If a subscription or payment plan was not previously migrated for one of the reasons listed above, and the criteria for migration is now fulfilled (e.g. a subscription is now un-paused), the subscription or payment plan will be migrated 30–60 days after the criteria has been met.
