A workspace admin must enable Thinkific MCP for your whole organization. Each organization member can then set it up and use it in the conversation.
How to Connect Thinkific to ChatGPT Using Developer Mode
Developer Mode adds support for custom MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers to the ChatGPT web app. Once enabled, you can connect Thinkific without installing the desktop app. This method works in any browser.
- In ChatGPT (web), open Settings
- Go to Developer settings (this may appear under Personalization depending on your ChatGPT version) and toggle on Developer Mode. The setting saves immediately — no restart needed.
- Click the + or Tools button next to the message input
- Select Add a custom MCP server
- Paste the following URL into the server URL field and confirm:
https://mcp.thinkific.com - Click Connect or Add. ChatGPT will warn that custom MCP servers run code on your behalf — this is expected
- On the OAuth consent page that opens, sign in to your Thinkific school
- Click Authorize
Once connected, start a new conversation, click Tools, select the Thinkific MCP server, and ask anything about your courses, students, or enrollments. You only need to authorize once — ChatGPT stores your token for future sessions.
How to Disconnect ChatGPT from Your Thinkific
- From your Admin Dashboard, select Integrations
- Select Thinkific MCP
- Select Uninstall
Important Considerations
- Authorization is one-time per user. Once connected, ChatGPT keeps access until you revoke it. Each user must authorize their own connection at setup.
- Only Site Owner and Site Admins can authorize ChatGPT's connection to Thinkific. Since the authorization is per-user, MCP is not available to users with other roles.
- One instance of ChatGPT can be connected to one Thinkific site only.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to reconnect every time I start a new conversation?
No. Authorization is one-time; you don't need to re-authorize with Thinkific each time.
How do I know the connection worked?
Ask ChatGPT something about your school — for example, "List my courses" or "What school am I connected to?" If the connector is active, ChatGPT returns your school data. If not, see Troubleshooting Thinkific MCP.
Can I connect multiple Thinkific sites to one ChatGPT instance?
No, at the moment, one instance of ChatGPT can be connected to one Thinkific site only.
