Important Considerations Before Disconnecting
We only recommend disconnecting Thinkific from Shopify if you are just setting up your account. If you have already created products and have completed orders, make sure to save a back up of this before proceeding. When disconnecting, you will lose the following:
- Products in Shopify including product descriptions and prices that were mapped to your Thinkific courses
- Previous orders of those Shopify products
- Any Shopify URLs associated with the product
How to Disconnect and Reconnect Your Thinkific Account
- In Shopify, select Apps
- Click Thinkific - Online Courses (you will be directed to Thinkific)
- In Thinkific, select the Setup tab
- Scroll down to Switch to another Thinkific account
- Click Switch accounts
- Click Disconnect account
- Once you disconnect, you will be taken to a sign-in page
- Fill in your Thinkific email, URL and password
- Click Sign in
Once you reconnect your Thinkific account, you will see duplicate products in your Shopify account, see how to manage those below.
Internal Server Error When Disconnecting
If you see {"message": "Internal server error"}
when attempting to disconnect Thinkific from Shopify, we have some additional troubleshooting steps to try:
- In your Thinkific account, go to Apps in the navigation menu on the left-hand side of the screen
- Locate the Shopify app
- Click Settings to go to the app settings page
- Check if your Shopify store URL is listed in the Shopify domain field
- If there is no Shopify URL, continue to Step 6. If there is a Shopify URL, please see the Error When Disconnecting - No URL section below
- Go to Shopify
- Select Apps
- Click Delete beside Thinkific
- Reconnect Shopify in Thinkific
Error When Disconnecting - No URL
If there is a Shopify URL present in the Shopify domain field and you are seeing {"message": "Internal server error"}
when attempting to disconnect Thinkific from Shopify, please reach out to our Support Team at technicalsupport@thinkific.com with the following information:
- The error you're seeing and that it is occurring when you try to disconnect Thinkific from Shopify
- The URL of your Shopify store
- The URL of your Thinkific site (How do I find the URL for a page on my Thinkific site?)
Handling Duplicate Products
When you create a course in Thinkific, a product is automatically created in Shopify that is mapped to your Thinkific course. This is all automated behind the scenes, but it is very important to be aware that your Thinkific course and Shopify product are automatically mapped to each other.
When you disconnect your Shopify store, this mapping will break. When you reconnect, new products will be pushed to Shopify that are correctly mapped to your courses. This means you will have a few duplicates that need to be deleted.
It is extremely important that you do not delete any of the newly created products as these are what will be correctly mapped. If you have deleted any of these new products by accident, please see How to make sure your course is listed in Shopify Products.
If you have not deleted anything yet and just need to clean up your duplicate products in Shopify, you'll want to make sure to copy any details from your original products that you need to save. When you are ready, then only delete the oldest products:
- Log in to your Shopify Account
- Select All Products
- Click Sort on the right
- Select Created (oldest first)
Now you will have the unmapped duplicate products at the top of your product list in Shopify. Make sure to only delete these oldest products.
