How to add audio to a lesson depends on which course builder you are using. In the New Course Builder, audio is added as a content block that displays as a playbar within the lesson. In the Classic Course Builder, audio is its own lesson type.
How to Add Audio in the New Course Builder
In the New Course Builder, audio files are added as content blocks and display as a playbar within the lesson.
- From the content menu, select More.
- Select Audio.
- Drag and drop your audio file, or browse and select a file from your device.
Supported file types: mp3, mp4, ogg, wav, webm, aac, opus (max file size 25MB).
Once uploaded, you can also:
- Replace the file — hover over the playbar, select Replace, then follow the steps above.
- Make the file downloadable — hover over the playbar and toggle on Allow downloads.
How to Add an Audio Lesson in the Classic Course Builder
Audio lessons in the Classic Course Builder can include a description that appears beneath the audio player in the lesson.
- From your Admin Dashboard, select Products.
- Select Courses.
- Select the course you want to edit by clicking on the course card image.
- In the course's Curriculum, select Add Content.
- Select Audio.
- Enter a lesson name under Title.
- Select any applicable options, such as Free Preview or Set to Draft.
- (Optional) Add a description — this will appear beneath the audio player in the lesson.
- Upload your audio file by dragging and dropping, or by selecting a file from your device. Supported file types: aac, mp3, mpga, ogg, wav, m4a (max file size 25MB). MP3 is recommended for best browser compatibility.
- Select Save.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can students adjust the playback speed of an audio lesson?
Yes. In the course player, open the lesson containing the audio file, scroll to the volume control area and select the three dots, then select Playback speed and choose a speed. Note that playback speed cannot be permanently saved and must be adjusted manually for each lesson.

Optional: Remove Margins in Course Player

Important Considerations
- Upload audio files directly to Thinkific. Files hosted outside of Thinkific may encounter playback errors.
- The appearance of the audio player varies depending on the browser your students are using.
