Installing the App
ConvertKit is a creator marketing platform with powerful features to help you optimize your audience - features like email marketing and automation, email template designer, and digital commerce tools.
ConvertKit works with courses in Thinkific - so you can create automations to send emails to your students any time a new student creates an account, enrolls in a course, completes a course, and more!
Note: Currently, ConvertKit is only optimized for compatibility with courses within Thinkific. Tags will be created for individual courses as well as courses included in a bundle. Communities are currently not supported.
Get your ConvertKit API Key
Before you install the Thinkific App, you'll need to log into your ConvertKit account and locate your API key setting:
- You can access or sign up for a ConvertKit account here: Sign Up for ConvertKit
- Once logged in to ConverKit, access the API key under Account, Account Settings, API Key
- Copy your API key
Note: Make sure the API key you select is the top key marked "API Key", and not the key marked as "API Secret" - if you enter the wrong API key, the installation will not complete correctly.
Install the ConvertKit App in Thinkific
- Locate the ConvertKit App in the App Store
- Click to Install the app
- You will be returned to the ConvertKit details page in Thinkific — under Your ConvertKit credentials, enter your ConvertKit API key
- Click Save
The ConvertKit app is now installed, and your account has been connected!
On the Integrations page, you should see a screen similar to the one below once the correct ConvertKit API key is input.
The next step is to set up your ConvertKit tags, so the app can create new users with the right tags on the ConvertKit side of things.
Set Up Your ConvertKit Tags
In order for your users to be created and tagged in ConvertKit, you'll first need to create the tags from your ConvertKit dashboard.
Once that's done, head back to your Apps page in Thinkific to link the tags to specific site events:
- Go to Apps
- Locate ConvertKit under your Installed Apps, and click Settings
- Scroll down to see the different tagging options.
- Under each tag option, use the Edit icon and dropdown menu to select your ConvertKit tag that will be applied whenever a student performs one of those actions
- Click Save
Available Tags
A user will only be created in ConvertKit if they perform one of the actions associated with a tag.
Here's what each of the actions means; i.e. what the student will need to do on your Thinkific site for the tag to be added in ConvertKit. Note that tags apply to individual courses as well as courses included within a bundle.

Student Payment Tracking
You can sync all of the orders that occur on your Thinkific site with your subscriber profiles on ConvertKit by turning on Enable student purchase tracking.
When enabled, each time a payment is made on Thinkific, the transaction information (purchase amount, discount applied, and total paid) are automatically passed to your ConvertKit account and attached to the subscriber profile of the user that made the purchase. Read more about how you can use this information to segment your users here.
If a student uses a coupon that provides them a 100% discount off their purchase, this order will not be sent to ConvertKit as a purchase event. However, it will be tagged under orders if there is a tag for the order product as it considers it a fully enrolls in a paid course.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can't I see my tags in ConvertKit?
When a student signs up, tags fire immediately, however there will be a 45 - 60 min delay before your tags are visible in ConvertKit. Make sure to check back later to confirm they are working as expected!
Why didn't my bulk bulk enrollments trigger the API with Convertkit?
It is currently intended functionality for bulk enrollments to not trigger actions in other integrations (more on that here: Bulk Enroll and Unenroll Students FAQ). Bulk enrollments are not expected to trigger tags in Convertkit.
