What is Pre-Selling?
Pre-selling is essentially selling your course before you create it. We know that creating a course is a huge investment and pre-selling is a great way to measure interest before committing to the time and resources you will be investing in your online course.
Pre-selling has many advantages and here are just a few!
Test the water to see if there's a market for your content and refine what that is.
Start capturing leads and building your email list before your full course launch.
Instant feedback - on your sales page, copy, introduction lesson - so that you can make improvements and make your course launch even smoother.
Motivates you to be accountable in building the course with great content.
This article covers the features in Thinkific that you can use to pre-sell your course. If you are looking for strategy, customer examples, and the why behind pre-selling, we have a great blog post you can check out here: Guide to Pre-Selling
How to Pre-Sell a Course in Thinkific
Before you can start pre-selling, you'll need to set up some basics within Thinkific:
- Create a Course
- Build Your Course Landing Page
- Set Your Pre-Sell Price
- Customize Your Course Welcome Email
- Publish Your Pre-Sell Course
Create a Course
First things first, you'll need to create a course in order to start selling. If you are new to Thinkific, check out how to get started with that here: Creating a Course
Think of this course as a placeholder for your full course. You are just preparing to pre-sell, so you don't need to create all of your content just yet. We recommend simply including a welcome or thank you in a Video Lesson or Text Lesson in the course as this is a great opportunity to let your buyers know what to expect and get excited about launch.
Build Your Course Landing Page
Now that you have created the course, you'll need to get started on your course landing page. This is where your students will be signing up to buy your course, so make it shine!

Set Your Pre-Sell Price
There are a ton of things to consider when setting your course price and if you are looking for some tips on pricing, check out our blog post: How to Price Your Online Course
You can consider offering early-bird pricing to reward those who buy the course during your Pre-Sell. This can be a great incentive to buy the course before it launches.
If you would like to offer early-bird pricing, you can set a cheaper price for your course during the pre-sell period and later update the price on launch day or you can use coupons to provide a discount!
Customize Your Course Welcome Email
When a student enrolls in your course, you have the option of sending a Course Welcome Email from Thinkific. This is also a great opportunity to thank them for signing up and providing additional information about your course.
Learn how to customize that here: Send a Course Welcome Email
Publish Your Pre-Sell Course
Congrats! Now that you have set everything up, you can publish your Pre-Sell course and start sharing it with your audience.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if I don't want to sell the course and just want to collect emails?
We have a few options you can consider for collecting emails here: How to Capture Emails
My course is subscription based and I need the payments to start on a specific date. How can I do this?
This is possible and requires some manual updates in Stripe.
First set the subscription to include a 7 day free period in Thinkific (Here's how). This will give you time to change the date in Stripe. After the student purchases the subscription, log into your Stripe account, find the customer’s subscription, and change their free trial date end date to expire on the launch day date. Now students will not be charged for their subscription until the course launches!
